General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Mid Victorian (1885-1886)Grantee : J Madders 1865Row of three double storey terrace houses with notable fences, verandahs, cast iron lace and cement renderJames Madders, who had been in the hotel trade, had these houses built in 1885-86, although it wasn't until 5 years later that he actually resided in 454 Dryburgh Street. Some of his tenants before 1895 included Sarah Allison, presumably of the ubiquitous family of North Melbourne undertakers; John Henry Fox, a civil servant; and Samuel Norris, a carrier. The name id presumably derived from St. Michael's Catholic School, then in Arden Street.A two-storey, parapetted and partly unpainted stuccoed brick row with a two-level cast-iron verandah and iron picket fence: a gabled entablature is placed centrally in the panelled and piered parapet. Notable features include fence, verandah decoration, verandah roof and structure.Architecturally, it is a conservative, austere design of a much-used row house form-type and contributive to a precinct. Historically, a speculative development of local interest.454 is also known as San Antonio; there is a plaque on the house with this name.
