Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1877)Grantee : J Munro 1875___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- Between 1877 when they were built and 1895, these row houses were owned by two men who bought them as rental propositions, John Harvey (1877 - c1885) and John Leonard, an Auctioneer and estate agent (c1885 - 1895). The tenants appear mainly to have been tradesman, i.e. George Dickie, plumber, Roland Meredith, bootmaker; William Hemmings, Tanner; and James Laidlaw, moulder.Description- A mixed design, three stuccoed row houses (59-63) and one (65) row house, each possessing a differing character: 59-63 have unusual half-hipped asymmetrically placed bays combined with verandahed transverse gabled forms - all roofs being iron clad. 65 is a simple, transverse gabled cottage with a verandah. All houses have iron picket fences. Ornament consists of sparse bracketting to the eaves and cast-iron friezes to the verandah bressumer. 59 has a slated roof, 61-63 an iron roof and 65 a new tiled roof.Integrity - Generally original except for colours and gutters and roofing.Streetscape - Contributive element to a 19th century residential precinctSignificance- Architectural, of little importance except as a variation on the row house form. Historically, an example of speculatively built row houses..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
