W. and F. B. Tompkins for Messrs. Manton and Sons Pty. Ltd. On the specification they noted "the new work to be erected on the Theatre Royal site buildings of which are to be demolished with the exception of the back building in Little Bourke Street and the external walls on East and West sides which are to remain.2 The new building was designed with flat plate reinforced concrete floors which Frank Norris believed to be the first in Melbourne. 3The original design showed only a ground floor and one storey with the facade of the building designed as three storeys - the second floor windows being backed by timber walls. The specification noted that the building was designed for the addition of two storeys. In 1937 H. W. and F. B. Tompkins completed the design of Mantons by the erection of the block facing Little Bourke Street (nos. 209-225). This resulted in the demolition of the back of the old Theatre Royal. This facade is still existing as built. In 1954 H. A. and F. W. Norris carried out extensive alterations to this building and designed 222-226 Bourke Street to match the existing facade, and also added the extra floors and parapet details. These were carried out for G.J. Coles and Co. and they occupied the premises in 1955, with these alterations the only remaining remnant of the Theatre Royal is the west wall.1.
