GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1875-1876)Grantee : A Cooper 1873History- More is known of the early tenants in this house than the owner. He was possibly James Kennedy, an hotelier, who had the house built in 1875-6 after which he leased it to a series of skilled tradesmen representing important North Melbourne industries e.g. Myer Sullivan, a bootmaker, David Jamieson, a coach builder. Builder and grantee, Alex Cooper is also a possible builder-developer of this property.Description- A transverse gabled face brick cottage with an iron verandah and timber spade-head picket fence. Brick dog-toothing at the chimney cornices, multi-paned windows and cast-iron, in frieze panels, as a post and as balustrading panels at the verandah, are valuable elements.Integrity - The brickwork has been painted.Streetscape - Isolated element, paralleled in scale and loosely in materials by 7 Haines Street.Significance- Architecturally, exemplifies an intact (in respect to elements) early cottage type well: of regional importance. Historically, of local interest as an intact building type and as housing typical occupations in the area.RecommendationsRemove paint from brickwork by approved method;repaint fence and trim in original colours:record fence and balustrade details for restoration data.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
