GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Early Victorian (1873)Grantee : G Robinson 1853History- Sullivans or O'Sullivans were the owners of these houses for over 20 years after they were built in 1873. Patrick O'Sullivan was the first owner/occupier after which Daniel Sullivan (sometimes O'Sullivan) took over the houses. Henry Beerling, the butcher and his wife Elizabeth were long-standing tenants (1880-1895) in 72 Lothian Street, while 70 had a more transitory population- John Folkes, William Martin, William Wigley, Levi Pizer.Description- A two-storey row house pair of stuccoed brick, with a two-level verandah and cast-iron balustrading. It is parapetted, with a simple cornice, and the verandah walls are simply decorated. Iron picket fences are used at the frontage, whilst what appears to be an early Victorian-cast baluster-panel is used at the verandah.Integrity - Generally original excepting details.Streetscape - Isolated pair.Significance - Architecturally, a typical and relatively numerous form-type from the period in near original condition: of high local importance.Historically, of little known significance.Recommendations –Repaint in original or typical colours.consider zoning provisions to maintain use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
