General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1886)Grantee : William Collis 1865___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEHistory- The 'Victorian Post Office Directory' gives Cornelius Crowley's occupation as 'showstandman'. He had a standmaking business in Little Lonsdale Street. He owned these houses after their construction in 1886 for at least 10 years, living briefly in 35 around 1887. His tenants included two ministers of religion, William Souter (1895) and Joseph Teague (1886) of the Bible Christian Church and others of various occupations such as Joseph Cranston ( contractor), Thomas Shapcott (plasterer), and Isaedore Lobascher (warehouseman).Description- A two storey stuccoed brick row with two level cast iron verandahs and balconies, guilloche pattern parapets and a central, arched entablature bearing the terrace's name : a shell motif is used in the tympanum. Cast iron front and dividing fences and brackets to the party wall faces are further decorative elements whilst some dentillation mouldings survive under verandah gutters at numbers 35 and 37. A large Canary Island Date Palm grows in front of No. 35 (since removed).Integrity - Incomplete cast-iron to all houses, roof and verandah gutters have been replaced and dentillation for the latter on 39, has gone, whilst upper gutter moulds have also been removed; and urns (presumed) have gone from the parapet.Streetscape - contributive part of a relatively heterogeneous precinct.Significance- Architecturally, a substantial if not necessarily architecturally worthy row of intermediate integrity ; of local importance. Historically, of interest only as the residence of successive ministers of religion, given Brougham Street's two churches (Wesleyan Chapel, Bible Christian Chapel) and one convent....References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 D 1884-85;2 RB· 1886-7, 3762-4; RB 1895-6, 3771-4; RB 1895-96, 37713.
