While the CMP has no specific legal status under Victorian legislation, CMPs are important reference texts that describe the history, physical features and significance of heritage places, and statutory authorities (Heritage Victoria, the Heritage Council of Victoria and local planning authorities) will often give considerable weight to the research and policy recommendations they provide.
