Kaiser, of Hawthorn, to build three shops and dwellings in late 1897.3 Early tenants were Joseph Kinnon (231- fancy goods), Miss Rachel Abraham (233- furniture) and Mrs. Morris Cohen (235- a Jewish restaurant).4 Michael Bacash & Son (fancy goods importers) leased 233 for over ten years, as did C.F. Haddad (235), whose occupation changed dramatically from fruiterer in c1911 to 'underclothing manufacturer' in c1919.5 Chinese ran a cafe in 235 around 1930, next to the John Collis Cafe at 233. The Cafe Travatore was in 233 during the late 1930s, following the Silver City Club of the early 1930s. The Albanian Club (1st Floor) and the Maori Poh Cafe, both occupied 233 in c1950, next to Joe's Comedy Cafe (231). Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the J.E. Crisp Estate owned the shops after a brief ownership, in c1925, by the Melbourne City Mission.DescriptionDesigned to face Exhibition Street, as a two-storey five shop row, only the upper level of three of these shops is near complete. Built of (painted) face brickwork the main composition device is the Palladian tri-partite window group set central to each shop and in a pedimented window bay, originally central to each end shop. The centre shop is marginally larger than any other, originally as the focus to the row. English Queen Anne brackets and scrolls are used above the remaining central windows and impost, cornice and architrave mouldings are in cement. The parapet wall and capping are unexpectedly plain. Street verandah angle fixing plate survives.External IntegrityTwo northern shops defaced or demolished. Bricks painted, intrusive canopy and shopfronts added (19(h plans show recessed doorways on the right-hand of 231-3, 237 on the left of 235 and non-recessed at the corner (2.39)-9 Parapet details may have been modified.StreetscapeRelates to Her Majesty s and the balance of this street frontage to the south of 229 Exhibition Street.SignificanceExternally, contributing to the streetscape only with little visible signs of its occupation by a wide variety of ethnic clubs or cafes. Architecturally, it is incomplete and altered..Notes3 BA 7031.29/18974 D18975 D1932; D19396 D19507 RB194S. 968f., RB1930. 1249f;8 Mahlstedt’s___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM 1897 see Statement of Significance___________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX75379 Henderson, George; Godfrey, George - solicitor Melbourne VIC Houses; Shops Kaiser, J W - Hawthorn 1897 09 22 7031 - MCC registration no 7031 [Burchett Index].
