ASSOCIATED RESEARCH BY GRAEME BUTLER:Period: EdwardianGraeme Butler 1985 Melbourne Central Activities District Conservation StudyStatement of SignificanceHistoryMichael Mornane (q.v.) was the first owner of these three three-storey shops in 1905, built for him by F.B. Brady of 1 Church Street (The Retreat), Fitzroy. His first tenants included one Frederick Nitt, a dentist, Witt & Co., chemists, and (an apparent contradiction to the dentist co-tenant) the Navy Palace of Sweets, run by Arthur Preston (75, 75A). Andrew Hanley sold books in 77. By 1920 the Barclay Brothers (watchmakers in 75) and Albert Hutchison (elastic hosiery, 75A) had replaced two-thirds of the tenants, both remaining there into the 1930s.DescriptionAn austere Renaissance revival three-storey pair (cum trio), built in face brick as a gesture to the Edwardian period.Apart from the classical theme represented by the plain parapet, cornice and dividing pilasters, a Medieval touch has been applied via segment-arched hood moulds with terminating bosses. An iron Corporation (?) street verandah has been removed.External IntegrityVerandah gone, bricks painted and the ground level rebuilt.StreetscapeAdjoins and supports visually the highly notable former Y.M.C.A. Building.SignificanceAn austere and late application of a classical revival more akin to the Victorian era, but complementary to the important former Y.M.C.A. Building, adjoining.FURTHER REFERENCESLewis, M. For nearly half a century the deceased gentleman had been a practising solicitor. He was 75 years of age at the time of his death, and a wide circle of friends regret his passing. Mr. Mornane had been ill for six weeks, but he had apparently recovered, and contemplated returning to his professional work, when the end came. The Mornane family is well known in the lay Catholic history of Melbourne, and when Mr. Mornane's marriage to Miss Annie Dynon took place two notable Catholic families were united. Mrs Mornane died ten years ago. Born in Exhibition-street, Melbourne, and educated at St. Patrick's College, and later at the Melbourne University, Mr. Mornane commenced practice as a solicitor in 1882, and became honorary solicitor to a number of Catholic institutions, including St. Vincent's Hospital. He was very successful in his profession and was a keen and able man in other directions, acquiring wide interests and business influence, He was interested in Catholic affairs, and Mornane and many a charity benefited by his unostentatious assistance, for he was a generous man, who disliked attention being attracted to his benefactions. many an unknown kindly deed was performed by him. Mr. Mornane was a man of strong individuality and force of character, and of great personal and business integrity.
