General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: 1891History:The house at 32 Gower Street was built in 1891 for Herbert Quarry, a government employee who had owned the adjacent house (No. 30; see separate datasheet) since 1889. The rate books for 1891-92 show the five-room wooden house 'in progress' as 'to let'; its Nett Annual Value was #20. The following year's rate books show the first tenant to have been RR Patterson, a clerk; by this time the house had a Nett Annual Value of #28 and a population of six..Description:The house at 32 Gower Street is a single-storey, weatherboard Victorian villa with a hipped corrugated galvanised steel roof with timber bracketed eaves. L-shaped in plan, the house has a projecting section with a timber-framed tripartite double-hung sash window with a timber bracketed hood. The adjacent verandah has an ogee profile roof and turned timber posts; the frieze decoration has been removed. The entrance door has a side and fanlights. The timber picket fence is recent..Significance:The house at 32 Gower Street, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. It is a reasonably intact example of the type of weatherboard villa built during the first phase of development of Kensington. Aesthetically, the house contributes to the largely intact Gower Street streetscape, and relates visually to the adjacent Gordonville, at No. 30.
