The building is first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1891, when they are described as 'vacant'. The following year, the occupants were James Welsh, a baker, and A Turner, a greengrocer. Until at least 1935, the shops were occupied by a baker and a grocer..Description:The building at 429-431 Macaulay Road is a pair of single-storey rendered Italianate style shops. The facade has rendered pilasters framing the shopfronts, which have been altered. The roof is concealed behind a scrolled pedimented parapet. Other alterations include the addition of a cantilevered canopy..Significance:The pair of shops at 429-431 Macaulay Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, the pair is a remnant of Victorian commercial development along one of Kensington's main thoroughfares. Although the shopfronts have been altered, the nineteenth century form of the building is still apparent.
