The properties are known as 301- 311 Flinders lane, until recently occupied by Messrs. Wiseman Brothers, Wilkinson, Heyward and Clark, Duerdin and Sainsbury, and other tenants. They are on the south side of the lane just west of Elizabeth street, and the owners, Messrs Connibere, Grieve and Connibere, who acquired the site-81 ft. x 156ft 9in.— some time ago, are having the present structures removed to make room for a large new warehouse for their own use opposite the building they occupy at present.Mr Nahum Barnet is the architect for the new building. The illustration shows what a large contract Mr James Whelan, the build ing wrecker has tackled. Both the structures are five stories high, and a few years ago would have ranked in Melbourne as tall and strikingly valuable architectural features of the city. New York has reached the stage of discarding old skyscrapers for new, and Melbourne, making allowance, for its proportionate size, is following suit in the demolition of warehouses of modern date and considerable height, to make way for more up-to-date construction. In some cases where fire has done its worst, five story, buildings have been demolished here, but to pull down such places in their prime, so to speak, and undamaged by a blaze, is rare, if not unprecedented. In other respects the enterprise is remarkable.Mr. Whelan accepted the contract to destroy and remove the buildings in six weeks, and is under heavy penalties to carry through, the undertaking. He paid £700 for the privilege of taking the stuff away, which he claims is a record offering for such debris. Considering that the places must have cost nearly £20,000 to erect, £700 may seem a very small sum to be paid for them even as lumber. But that is how prices go for such jobs. The timber, windows, fit tings, stonework, and so forth, were made, of course, specially for the job, and the difficulty is always to find other places where the odd bits can be profitably fitted in.The facade of one building, as shown in the picture, is entirely of dressed bluestone, trimmed and moulded in good form. In the other all the bases are of blue- stone, some of the blocks weighing a ton or more. What will become of all this once highly prized stone? There is a possibility that some of it will go into the beach wall, at St. Kilda; but, as a rule, .such material, irrespective of its sculpture, is tipped into a stone- crusher and cracked up for concrete.Other days, other methods.Once the ruler who found a city of wood and left it stone was canonised. To-day we find Melbourne's most monumental bluestone piles regarded as fit meat for the concrete mixer. It will cost at least £500 to pull down these very substantial buildings. They are built on stout frames of Oregon and hardwood. But the spirit of the new construction era consigns them to the dock of derelict houses.Scores— perhaps it would be safe to say hundreds — of demolitions have occurred in Melbourne in the past five or six years, and, as this case shows, the new era in building promises not to spare "the tallest poppies.".1914 Melbourne's Prosperous Outlookhttps://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/234764675A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW`...In Flinders Lane, operations have been begun on Messrs. The Minister for the Interior (Mr Johnson) said this afternoon that a Cabinet sub-committee last night had considered projects to acquire sites in Melbourne, Hobart, and Adelaide for office purposes, but had reached no decision. The accommodation would be extended to rooms for Federal Ministers and members, and the object was the ultimate concentration of offices in a limited number of buildings..DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL1920301-311 Connibere.
