Formerly known as the Anderson Street Bridge, it was renamed in 1936 to honour the work of Sir Stephen Morell, Lord Mayor 1926-1928, and his active interest in promoting rowing on the Yarra. It was completed in 1899 by Sir John Monash and J T N Anderson and is notable as the first bridge in Victoria that was built using reinforced concrete, and features decorations on the three arch spans, including large dragon motifs and ornamental Victorian lights. In 1998 it was closed to motor vehicles and is now used by pedestrians and cyclists.
