General notes:
Period; Date: Inter-War; 1923Description: The former blacksmiths shop at 164-166 Cardigan Street is a single storey inter War rendered brick workshop with a hipped corrugated iron roof partly concealed by a low parapet. The facade is symmetrical, divided into three bays by wide piers with recessed panels. The central bay, containing a wide vehicular entry, has a stepped parapet and is flanked by two pairs of large steel framed windows with metal grilles.Significance: The building at 164-166 Cardigan Street, Carlton, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Originally erected as a blacksmith's workshop, it provides evidence of a commercial activity that, by the 1920s was beginning to become obsolete with the advent of the motor car. Aesthetically, the building is a typical example of an inter-War commercial building in the restrained Classically-derived style of the time.
