General notes:
Derived from GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE___________________________Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1887)Grantee : T Stephens 1852History - Phillimore and Ballymore were built in 1887, 1889-90 respectively, for John Enticott, an iron merchant, tin and coppersmith. He owned it until 1895, at least, and proceeded to lease it to John Smythe, a contractor and George Prendergast, a printer.Enticott established his business in the colony during 1858; pioneering among other things, it is claimed, the distribution of the new product, corrugated iron. He was born at Chard, Somerset, where he was apprenticed to a plumber and glazier. He retired in 1901, leaving his business to his sons and residing at Rosemont Cottage, Alphington.Description - A pair of wide-frontage, two-storey, stuccoed brick row houses with two-level cast-iron verandahs, each with a balustraded parapet and a central, arched entablature. The cast-iron balustrading has a guilloche pattern, whilst the frieze possesses a serpentine one; the fence is of cast-iron pickets, set between stuccoed piers. Flat-headed grouped lights with Tudor details and mouldings distinguish this pair.Integrity - Generally near original except for colours and the addition of signs and air conditioning. Streetscape - In an area of mixed character, generally built close to front and side boundaries. Significance - Architecturally, of a conservative design, although in near original condition. Historically, associated with Enticott who also has a more direct connection with the surviving, but altered Rosemont Cottage, Roemer Crescent Alphington: of regional interest.Recommendations - repaint in original or typical colours; consider zoning provisions to encourage original use and formReferences: (RB= Melbourne rate books)1.
