General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991: CPeriod : Late Victorian (1893)Grantee : H Glass and B Purcell 1852History- Matthew Starke, a dairy produce merchant of Haines Street, North Melbourne owned this shop and residence from its construction in 1893 until at least 1895. The undertaking firm of Joseph Allison leased these premises, under the name of Mary Ann Allison, until it moved to new premises at 145 Errol Street in 1896.Description- A two-storey parapetted shop and residence with a timber shop front. Drawing from the Italian Renaissance, ornament consists of a segment arched entablature, with surmounting acroterion, scrolls and piers on either end of the parapet. A deep cornice follows the stylised consoles set on panelled pilasters which terminate on heavy string-mould at the storey line. Lower level pilasters then demarcate shop front and business entrance from that of the residence. Impost and architrave mouldings decorate the upper windows.Integrity - Urns are missing from the parapet and the street verandah has been removed (presumably Corporation verandah); the residential entrance has been sheeted in.Streetscape - Contributing if isolated part of the Errol Street commercial precinct.Significance- Architecturally, near original condition late 19th century shop and residence with a competently designed elevation and ornament; of regional importance.Historically, an investment property built during an economically downcast period, when dairy produce was one of the few profitable enterprises in the metropolis: of regional interest.RecommendationsRepaint in original or typical colours;restore Corporation verandah;restore urns to parapet;restore doorway;consider zoning provisions to maintain original use and form, record shopfront for restoration data.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
