Leopold, Saunders and Co., whole sale jewellers. The house was closed at half- past fire p.m., when everything appeared safe. No one resides on the premises. The fire was first observed by persons passing along the street, who noticed flames appearing at one of the highest windows (which are protected by strong iron bars), looking out onto a very narrow lane, leading from Little Collin-street to the back of the premises. The top floor of the building is used for the manufacture of jewellery, the two lower floors being used as show rooms, and containing a large and valuable stock. The alarm having been conveyed by telephone to the insurance station, the companies' brigade was promptly on the scene, when it was found necessary to break open the front door of the warehouse. Entrance by this means having been gained, it was discovered that the fire had originated at one of the work men's benches. It was easily confined to that portion of the building; some of the flooring was burnt through and the window destroyed. The damage is covered by insurance..See also robbery article `THE CARTER JEWELLERY ROBBERY'https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/1970282091887https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/7930201NOTICE Is hereby given, that by Indenture dated the 7th day of April, 1887, SEPTIMUS WILSON, of Timor street Warrnambool, in the colony of Victoria, watchmaker and Jeweller (trading as Wilson Bros ) has conveyed and assigned all his effects unto Leopold Saunders of Little Collins street Melbourne, In the said colony importer and whole sale manufacturer,….
