General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Mid Victorian 1891Grantee : F Pelling 1853It is probable that Mrs. Stooke, who built (1891) and owned these row houses for at least 5 years, belonged to the Stooke family, shipping butchers of Chetwynd Street. They were occupied by people with a variety of occupations such as Thomas Moynan (draper, 1892); George Barrett (storeman, 1895); William Wallace (blacksmith 1892). In 1895, three of the tenants were engine drivers - John Powers, Joseph Williams and William Pearce, presumably due to the proximity of the railway station. Architect George de Lacy Evans designed these houses Stooke who had developed many other cottages in West Melbourne ["Building and Engineering Journal" 15 May 1891, p 5] [Melbourne Building Permit Applications 968/1865]A single-storey polychrome brick row of eight houses, with bullnose profile verandah roofs, panelled cast-iron friezes and unusual brick and iron fences at the frontage and sides: they illustrate Evans' Medieval influence. The parapet cornices are dentillated, the slated roof ridges once fringed with iron and the windows grouped in threes next to a recessed doorway.Architecturally, an altered row which is early for its form (bullnose verandah, metal and brick fence details) and detail: of regional interest. Historically, a development by one of the old families of the area: of local interest.
