General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1873)Grantee : John Thurgood 1866___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- John Dickie, a plumber and gasfitter of Melbourne, at first leased a two room timber house on this site to a Henry Spence, currier, but by 1873 had erected the present wooden 'six room house' and had proceeded to occupy it. William Dickie, also a plumber, took it in the late 1880s to be replaced by John in the early 1890s. By 1895-6, when the M.M.B.W. `Detail Plan 743' was compiled, this house is shown as the Hotham Police Station (NOTE: 59 Brougham Street was a former police station in the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works Detail Plan, not 61, but 61 was later also listed as the Hotham Hill station in DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS & MCDOUGALL to 1920 ) which Melbourne Directories describe as in the command of such persons as Sergeant John Cell and Patrick Bourke'Description- A double fronted, one level wooden house with a hipped roof and verandah and an asymmetrical plan which is expressed by a thrust, gabled bay. The gable valence is pierced and carved, the verandah decorated with cast iron and the cladding of a beaded edge board. A sympathetic timber picket fence has been erected at the frontage which incorporates a carriage way gate for a drive way which once communicated with the small stable and cell block at the rear. Generally original except for sympathetically replaced fence. Part of a residential precinct which is expressed here by detached villas rather than the typical row house form of other residential parts of the area.Significance- Architecturally, distinguished by its valence carving and gabled 'Gothic' form, this house is an early, near original and unusual 19th century dwelling type, of regional importance.Historically, owned by building-allied tradesmen, similar to Ellis (qv) and many others in the study area, this house is typical as well as fulfillingbriefly, the role of an early public utility in the area: being the earliest surviving building used as a police station [Refer 87 Chetwynd Street]:of local importance..Recommendations - Repaint in typical or original colours...References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 RB 1873, 3225; RB 1872 , 29372: RB 1885, 3746; RB 1890, 38553. D. 1895; D. 1890.(Notable features identified included the verandah decoration (new), verandah roof and structure, and a carriage way to side).NOTE: Both 59 and 61 Brougham Street were former police stations.___________________________DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL189359 Hotham Hill police stn-Coll, John, sergt61 Cliff, Harry63 Gibney Andrew65 Gibson , W. , carrier67 KelleherM,i chael69 Thomas, WilliamMelrose at.191059 Moore.
