RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2021:Period: Early VictorianConstruction date: 1856.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites source 78, p4;Victoria Illustrated: 133.MURPHY ARCHITECTS, JOHN AND PHYLLIS 1976. HISTORIC BUILDINGS STUDY OF PART OF THE C.B.D. MELBOURNE : { AREA 1} WITH MURPHY, JOCK, FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS PRESERVATION COUNCIL6. Characteristics of Selected Streets capes…. Flinders Street and Swanston Street - the famous and historic Young and Jackson's Hotel which occupies the north-western corner has incorporated two of the three stone stores which originally stood beside it in Flinders Street. The third store, dating back to the fifties still stands at 224-226 Flinders Street and these buildings together form a corner streetscape of historic importance. Linked with the 1905-10 National Trust classified Flinders Street Railway Station and the famous meeting place `under the clocks’ this corner provides local colour for the railway commuters7.67224-226 Flinders StreetConstruction Date : 1856 1A row of bluestone warehouses in Flinders Street stood between the corner building occupied by Jas. Graham (now Young and Jackson's) and the Port Philip Club Hotel in the 1850s. Three of them have now been absorbed into the famous Young and Jackson's including the previous Evening Standard building, but the stone store which was against the eastern boundary of the Port Philip Club Hotel remains today. The ground floor has been altered to a coffee shop and a large advertisement obscures the first floor level. However, the second floor stonework is clearly visible and although the interior of the building appears to have been burnt out, it is externally intact at this level, as shown in early photographs. 21..
