RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________Period: Late VictorianDATE: 1891-2;ASSOCIATIONS: Balcombe, Mrs;DESIGNER: Hyndman & Bates;BUILDER: Brown, R CNotable features: 1. Relates strongly to City of Melbourne Building, probably same designer of Winfield Building - pediments & tower to parapet.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites parapet date;78 MURPHY ARCHITECTS, JOHN AND PHYLLIS 1976. HISTORIC BUILDINGS STUDY OF PART OF THE C.B.D. MELBOURNE : { AREA 1} WITH MURPHY, JOCK, FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS PRESERVATION COUNCIL, p1- Bank Hotel, former Colonial Hotel 1893 section 7.21. ;The 1877 Mahlstedt map shows the site of the Colonial Bank Hotel site being formerly occupied by Smith's Hotel. Although the existing building is· marked 1891, it shows in the Rate Books as a hotel of twelve rooms at that date and occupied by A. Levy. It was owned at this time by Mrs. Balcombe who had inherited a considerable amount of property from her husband, and the narrow street at the side is known as Balcombe Place to this day.In 1892 the Hotel is missing from the rate books but land is owned by Mrs. Balcombe and 1893 the Colonial Bank Hotel is shown as thirty rooms. It appears, then, to have been rebuilt at this stage but it has kept its earlier date on the facade·This building, complete with turret, makes a splendid pair with the City of Melbourne Building. Both are decorative red brick buildings, ornate and very expressive of the elaborate boom period. The original name was taken from the Colonial Bank which used to be on the north-east corner of Little Collins Street and Elizabeth Street, although it has since been named the Hotel Barclay and is now used as offices and shops .cites1.
