GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Federation (1913)Grantee : W O Short 1852History- Mary-Ann Allison of the ubiquitous undertaking firm of Joseph Allison owned these homes, which had become designed for her by the prolific North Melbourne architect, William H. Webb. [Board of Works 21923] Members of the family were residents at various stages e.g. Thomas Allison lived in 156 Errol Street in 1914 and Mrs. Allison herself lived in 162 in 1915. Other residents were such as Donald Pattie, John Charles and a Mrs. C. Crow.Description- A row (156-60) of single-storey, single-fronted red brick houses, in a traditional, transverse gabled row house form, with contemporary elements applied (i.e. central half-timbered gables, Marseille pattern tiles, terracotta ridge decoration and banded chimney shafts) amongst traditional ones such as the cast-iron fences and verandahs, albeit with Medieval pattern frieze work. 162 is similar to 156-160 but set on an asymmetrical, double-fronted plan with major and minor half-timbered gables and bracketted hoods over the casement-sash windows (this was the owner's residence).Integrity - Generally originalStreetscape - The hillside site allows a picturesque stepping of the roofline which adds to the contrived picturesque quality of the individual designs and the streetscape generally. The row also parallels with the contemporary 172-82 Errol Street to provide counterpoint in style, but reinforcement of siting and form of the older streetscape opposite.Significance- Architecturally, although only a competent use of the contemporary stylism, its combination with the older row house form makes this row an uncommon example; it is in original condition and contributes to a residential/commercial precinct: of high regional importance. Historically, associated with the local Allison family and their development in the area which started in 1865 with 217-19, 221 Victorian Street (qv); of high local importance.Recommendations - Repaint trim in original or typical colours.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; BW MMBW Property Service Plan )1.
