GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991: DPeriod: Early Victorian (1875)Crown Grantee: H Peck & Co 1867History - Mrs. Callanan was the owner of these buildings for 20 years from their construction in 1875. Callanan was a common name around North and West Melbourne. No given name is listed for Mrs. Callanan, but she may have been connected to Michael Callanan of Haines Street or Mrs. Mary Callanan of Stanley Street, West Melbourne. The corner shop was occupied by a series of butchers, Thomas Cotterell, Peter Garrett, and Samuel Bishop who was there for over fifteen years. The houses were leased to men of various trades: an Edward Coulson and Alexander Dunn, carpenters; Dominick Rowan, a tobacco maker; and Francis Steel and George Parsons, plumbersDescription- Transverse gabled, stuccoed single-storey verandahed row houses connected to a parapeted corner shop, with timber framed shop fronts.Integrity - Largely altered: presumed picket fences having been removed (58) or modified (54-6) and the shop front '(south) and doors altered on the shop.Streetscape - The corner shop is a contributive element in the Errol Street precinct.Significance- Architecturally, a little significance due to alterations, but the corner shop exemplifies the construction date: of local interest.Historically, investment housing and a leased corner shop, a facility of a type and location typical of the 19th century, and is of local interest.RecommendationsRestore lost elements to houses and shop, as evidence allows or as typical;repaint in original or typical colours.___________________________References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)RB 1875-76, 1566-69: RB 1895- 96 1502-05 .
