General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE• Allotment Pt.3, Section 6• Grantee H. Glass & C. Purcell, 1852• Built 1873• Grading as at 1991: B• Period: Early VictorianHistory- In 1873, two shops and the Oxford hotel were built for Thomas Hearty who already owned other hotels in the metropolis. Other owners before 1895 were A. Hollowell and a Mr. Beekworth. By 1890, the hotel had extended to the shop (117) and they were rated as one property until after 1895. Publicans in the hotel included John Hurley and Michael O'Brien who was there for 10 years. The William Cristfield, the law clerk, then his wife Alice, the dressmaker were tenants of long-standing in the corner shop between 1880 and 1895.Description- Two-storey, stuccoed brick shops and residences with a corniced parapet and architraved upper windows. These have generally flat, pediments whilst the central window has a segment-arched pediment over a main light and two secondary lights: forming the serlian motif. Timber framed shop fronts exist at the lower level.Integrity - Door to 119 has been replaced; the street verandah has been removed (as has the drinking trough at the kerb opposite the door).Streetscape - Contributing part of the Errol Street commercial precinct, filling a minor block.Significance- Architecturally, a relatively distinguished design for its period and in near original condition. It occupies an island site and contributes to the streetscape: of high regional importance. Historically, as a former hotel, the building was important socially in the area: of local importance.Recommendations –• Consider rebuilding verandah in Corporation pattern;• repaint in typical or original colours;• replace door to 119, as 115-17;• record shopfronts for restoration data.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
