Much of the character of Flinders Lane is derived fromthe small scale, but somewhat flamboyant warehouses .- CITES 1. Sands &McDougall's Directories of Victoria, 1901,7.60176 Flinders LaneConstruction Date : 1888 1In 1888, Mr. James H. Turner built his millinery warehouse in Flinders lane East as it was then called. It is a rather grand building, although small in scale, with a variety of loosely used classical details and a large broken pediment, above. It expresses all the optimism and success of the `Lane’ at this period. The Leader of 1895 sums up the character which prevailed: "When one mentions `The Lane’ nowaday visions of soft goods warehouses and smart commercial men are summed up. The Lane is to Melbourne what Wood Street, Cheapside is to London. Flinders Lane early became the site of great warehouses .This narrow thoroughfare with the r.o.w's leading there from more resembles London than any other part of Melbourne. 2Mr. James Turner arrived in Victoria by the ship `Birmingham’ in 1852. The company became a limited liability company called the `Denton Hat Mills’ but Mr. Turner continued to manage the business. He was active in municipal affairs having twice been mayor of Collingwood, once when it was a borough. He was a J.P. and "mainly due to his tact and exertion the City of Collingwood is indebted for the possession of the splendid reserve of 10 acres, known as `Victoria Park’.21. M.C.C. They havethe very distinct character of the "rag trade" and make an excellent foil for each.
