General notes:
Period; Date: Victorian; 1886History: The land at 201 Walsh Street forms part of a Crown Allotment which was purchased in March 1849 for £342. A six-room brick house was constructed on the site in 1886 by builder F Nixon of South Yarra, to a design by noted architects, Reed Henderson and Smart. Rate books show that the owner/occupier at this time was JE Gilbert... By 1916, the house had been enlarged to eleven rooms, with Colin Culquhoun as owner/occupier... Roy McLellan was the owner/occupier by 1936. After this date, the house was converted into two flats, which by 1955 were owned by Lois Lathleen...The partnership of Reed Henderson and Smart was formed in 1883 following the retirement of Joseph Reed's partner, Frederick Barnes. The firm, in its various incarnations, was a prolific practice in the mid to late nineteenth century, responsible for many of Melbourne's public buildings including St Paul's Cathedral, the Melbourne Town Hall, the Exhibition Building and numerous buildings at Melbourne University.Description: ...a large, double-storey red brick house with a hipped slate roof. L-shaped in plan, the projecting bay has a bracketed gambrel roof and, at first floor level, three timber-framed double-hung sash windows. A cream brick string course encircles the house beneath the eaves. The tall red brick chimneys have cream brick strappings and corbelled cappings. A garage and entrance gate has been constructed at the front of the property in the inter-War period.Significance: ...of local aesthetic and historical importance. ...representative of the more substantial residences which were erected in South Yarra in the nineteenth century Boom period, a major phase of development in the area. The house is a minor work of the noted and prolific architectural firm, Reed Henderson and Smart, and survives substantially intact.
