General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: pre-1882History:The terrace at 2-6 Henry Street was built prior to 1882. The rate books for 1881-82 show James Wallace as the owner of three four-room brick houses. No.2 had an Nett Annual Value of 20 pounds, whilst Nos. 4-6 were valued at 22 pounds. Wallace himself lived in No. 6, while No. 2 was occupied by Harry Devine (?), a civil servant, and No. 4 Arthur Fitts. Wallace remained owner until at least 1888. Subsequent tenants in the 1880s included a gardener, a tinsmith, a labourer, a railway employee and Harry Goldsmith, the stationmaster of Kensington railway station..Description:The terrace at 2-6 Henry Street comprise a row of three double-storey rendered brick Victorian houses, constructed on the street boundary, under a common hipped corrugated galvanised steel roof. The houses have double-storey verandahs separated by rendered wing walls; that at No.4 retains its original cast iron columns, lacework and balustrading, whilst those at Nos. 2 and 6 have been extensively altered. Windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes, tripartite at first floor level. Ornamentation is limited to rendered masks and corbels to the wing walls and moulded cappings to the chimneys..Significance:The terrace at 2-6 Henry Street, Kensington, is of historical and aesthetic interest. The houses are representative of Victorian terrace development in the area. Although alterations have been made to the verandahs of the houses, they remain otherwise reasonably intact. The terrace is an important element in the Henry Street streetscape.
