General notes:
Image held by North Melbourne Library.Part of the series by Nicholas Chevalier for Victoria Illustrated, 1863."Erected on a lofty eminence in the northern suburb of the city, this structure is one of the first that greets the eye of the stranger as he sails into Hobson's Bay, and offers gratifying proof that the charms of life are not forgotten in the ardent pursuit of its more material objects and rewards. The Benevolent Asylum, of which the first stone was laid, in 1850, was established to relieve the aged and infirm, disabled or destitute of all creeds or nations, and to minister them the comfort of religion, and during the ten years of existence it has steadily fulfilled that purpose. Although its capacity to receive inmates is far from commensurate with the numerous claims upon its bounty, it affords accommodation for 224 inmates, but owing to the destitute circumstances in which many immigrants arrive in the colony, and the necessities of health and future to which the mining population are exposed, the applicants for admission usually exceed the number of beds vacant. Its revenue is subsidized by an annual grant of £9,000 from the Legislature, of which £3,000 is raised by voluntary donations and subscriptions. A Superintendent and a Matron are entrusted with the internal management of the institution, and under the direction of a Committee, two honorary Physicians, two honorary Surgeons, and a Resident-Surgeon, constituting the medical staff. The building was erected at a cost of £22,000, but its enlargement will be necessary to enable it to carry out to the fullest extent the excellent objects for which it was established."
