Grading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Victorian (1870)Grantee : C B Peel 1852___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- This residence and shop and residence, was developed and owned by Morgan Kennedy who owned the hotel next door, the Edinburgh Castle, an important landmark in its time. From its opening in 1870, the shop was leased to various traders including John McIntyre, a draper, the grocers James and William Muir and later another draper, Henry Kriese. The shop was still owned by Kennedy in 1896.Description- A two-storey, stuccoed brick and parapetted shop and residence pair with timber shop fronts and a scrolled segment-arched entablature between piers, adorned with urns. Architraved windows, cornice and string-moulds and smooth rustication to 56, provide the stucco ornament and arcaded window lights embellish the shop front. Notable features include intact shopfront.Integrity - The shop front glazing has been sheeted in and the arcaded top lights are incomplete; and the door panels may have been altered indetail (as inspected February, 1983). Note: renovation in progress.Streetscape - Next to the Edinburgh Castle (renovated 1924) and 64-60; all 19th century and sympathetic in character or in actuality, but an isolatedgroup in an industrial area.Significance- Architecturally, a near complete and early example of stuccoed, Italian influenced commercial architecture with the valuable shop front component near intact: of high regional importance. Historically, next to the old Edinburgh Hotel and developed by its owner, serving as a corner grocery over a long period and now devoid of its population base: of local importance.Recommendations - Restore shop front arcade as evidence suggests;repaint in typical or original colours;record shop front details for restoration data;and consider zoning provisions to preserve original use and form..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
