General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1871)Grantee : Kirk & Co 1859William Davis was probably the first owner of the row houses in 1871. He occupied no 154 until at least 1885, but he sold the row in 1875 to Newman Levi who already owned 144-50 Capel Street and who lived in 152 Capel Street from c1880 to 1885. Some of the tenants stayed there for many years i.e. Edward Ellershank, a sheepsalesman (1875-1885), but generally there was a transient population from most levels of the social strata, from William Brunton, a gentleman, to John O'Neill, a labourer.Two-storey, stuccoed brick row houses with two-level, cast-iron verandahs between part walls; a transverse-gable iron-clad roof form has been used and no parapet walls divide the roof. Cast-iron balustrading and friezes are from the founder John Slater who patented this maritime pattern in 1870; being among the first group of iron patterns to be patented in Victoria. [E Graeme and Joan Robertson 'Melbourne Heritage" 1960] Iron picket fences, windows with sidelights, cement orbs, masks and brackets are also used. Notable features include the verandah.Architecturally - the simple form evokes the row's age and it is relatively original; it achieves architectural interest from the cast-iron pattern which marks the row as among the first to be built, using all Victorian cast-iron verandahs. Historically, distinguished by the fact that the speculator, Newman Levi, chose to live in one of them after his purchase of the row c1875. Of local interest.
