Ash) told the Minister for Education (Mr. Hollway) at a deputation to protest against conditions at the printing department of the school Included - in the deputation were representatives of the Victorian Master Printers' Association and the Printing Industry Employes' Union. ' - ' Mr. Ash said the equipment compared badly with that available at overseas schools. The president of the Master Printers' Association (Mr. K-. D. Macdougall) said two of the machines frequently used were purchased second-hand in 1900, and the other in 1910. Victoria was in a worse position than any other State; v , The Minister said the state, of affairs presented to him was' alarming. The Government was considering a proposal which would affect the whole future and scope-, of the college. The council agreed to request the department to withhold Its decision to set up a new printing school and that the incoming Director of Education (Major-General Ramsay) be instructed to inquire Into the matter when overseas. The structure will he built in reinforced framed concrete, and will be of six stories. It will house the architecture and industrial management departments of the college. The Minister for Public Works (Mr. Merrifield) yesterday Invited tenders, closing on July 13, for the erection of a new brick and concrete building. The intention is to centralise all printing trades students at North Melbourne and to use the portion of the : Melbourne Technical College, where instruction is now being given, for other purposes. At present, 450 printing trades students are being taught at Melbourne Technical College and 436 are attending the 4 Melbourne Printing Trades school. The new building will have two main stories and a basement.
