[Dr Blanchard "notes prepared by Dr Blanchard for an early history walk of the area" held by NMA and North Melbourne Library]This possibly reflects Waddick's Irish background and is another indication of the importance of the Irish in early North Melbourne. The tenants represented a wide cross-section of society from William Robertson, a traveller, to William McKenzie, a manufacturer. Waddick probably owned these houses until his death in 1899. [L Stavrias Hons History Essay 1967 - held by North Melbourne Library]Among the tenants was the architect William H Webb.Description- Possibly to the design of local architect, W.H. Webb, this is a row of nine two-storey stuccoed brick houses: two with masonry arcades supported on large diameter iron columns with iron balustrading and seven with two-storey cast-iron verandahs. Each house has a parapetted roof line, with piers, balustrading and central entablature, whilst the row (480-96 Abbotsford Street) has a central arched entablature, bearing its name.Overall, the composition strives to contrast the trabeated iron verandah dominance of the centre, with the arcaded/arched masonry emphasis of the two end-bays: seen as one elevation, this is not symmetrical nor is it balanced, in mass to void. This is accentuated by the hill side site and the former contrasting commercial nature of 480-4 Abbotsford Street. The decorative elements include ornately profiled verandah party-walls, with applied face-mouldings and urns to the parapet piers. Pedimented door heads, to the six-panel doors, a corniced window bay containing the two segment-arched windows and the iron picket fence are other elements.Integrity - Door-head pediment missing from 492; urns missing from most parapet piers; iron friezes and brackets gone from 488.Streetscape- The row comprises effectively one block and thus it is a major streetscape element. linking the mixed use Abbostford Street elevation, with that of residential Chapman Street.Significance- It is one of the longer rows in the State but of limited architectural success, due to compositional imbalance and incoherence. However, it is near original and major streetscape element and is of regional significance.Historically, it is connected with an important citizen in North Melbourne.___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:.___________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX26944 Webb, William H; North Melbourne VIC Houses; Shops 1891 6 20 -Tender accepted for portion of work for 10 houses and shops in Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne (Victoria).Australasian Builder and Contractor's News 20.6.1891 p 48140708 Webb, William H; North Melbourne VIC Houses; Shops 1891 6 13 - Tender for supply of bricks and timber accepted for erection of terrace of nine residences, and shop and residence, North Melbourne.Australasian Builder and Contractor's News 13.6.1891 p 461___________________________NEWSPAPERS (TROVE):1888https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/169705454THE IRISH EVICTIONS.MEETING IN NORTH MELBOURNE.A MOST enthusiastic and well-attended public meeting was held in the North Melbourne Town Hall on the evening of Thursday,1st March, to express sympathy with the evicted tenants in Ireland.
