General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : CThe building at 631 Queensberry Street first appears in the rate books in 1890, listed as a brick shop of six rooms valued at £54. The building was owned and occupied by Henry Symon, a draper, and replaced Symon's smaller wooden shop valued at £20. The building is remarkably similar to those at 553-555 Queensberry Street, suggesting that they were designed by the same architect. It is a double-storey Victorian building constructed in red brick with ornate, unpainted rendered detailing. The roof is concealed behind a balustraded parapet. The first floor level is intact with a pair of arched windows with paterae, keystones and fielded panels, which are surmounted by a pediment and moulded console brackets. A rendered panel below the pediment has the words H. Symon inscribed in raised rendered lettering. The shopfront has been altered. There is an unpainted brick chimney with corbelled capping. It is of local aesthetic and historical importance, demonstrating the diversity of commercial development which occurred in North Melbourne during the late nineteenth century. The building, which retains ornate architectural detailing at first floor level, is of individual aesthetic importance and makes a considerable contribution to the streetscape.
