Grading as at 1999 : DPeriod : Mid Victorian (1880)This shop, originally numbered as 8 Victoria Street, first appears in the rate book for 1880-81, described only as an 'unfinished' brick building, valued at £46. It was owned by William Davis, and it was still 'empty'. The following year, the rate books describe it more specifically as a four-room brick shop and dwelling, now valued at £60. By that time, it had become occupied by Alexander Merrett, a watchmaker. The shop remained in the ownership of William Davis until at least 1900. During that time, it was occupied by various commercial tenants including Esther Jones, a dressmaker, Richard Congdon, a fruiterer, Esther Levy, a clothes dealer ab Richard Child, a tailor .This building is a nineteenth century, double-storey, rendered shop. The walls are of rendered brick. The building has a balustraded parapet with a moulded cornice and console brackets at each end. The first floor façade has two timber-framed double-hung sash windows with rendered moulded architraves, string courses and a balustraded parapet.It of local historical and aesthetic interest, being a typical example of an Italianate style shop and dwelling, demonstrating a particular phase in the commercial development of the area.
