This impressive building in the heart of the city, with its 435 guest-rooms, will be opened on August 24 by the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies. It occupies the old Eastern Market site bounded by Bourke Street (on the right) and Exhibition Street (on the left), a two-and-a-quarter-acre corner block. Incorporating an interior plaza, the hotel has shop rental space on three levels.HUGE "SOUTHERN CROSS" sign and emblem topping the hotel hide two floors of air-conditioning and electrical equipment. Twenty-three shades of blue were used in the mosaic tile panels on the exterior of the building. Black screenings and white, brown, and cream pebbles form a pattern on the low flat roofs. From the top floor there is a wide view of Melbourne and its surrounding suburbs from Port Phillip Bay to the Dandenongs.Accommodation prices rise with the floors, in the American way. BLACKWOOD PANELLING and fittings give The Tavern on the plaza level of the hotel the look of an old English inn. Stained and leaded windows attractively filter the daylight. A big brass-railed island bar in the centre of the room will be "manned" by bar- maids to give the right atmosphere. This is one of nine restaurants and bars in the hotel. . Beatles in Melbourne to- night passed off surprisingly without incident. Earlier, however, workmen, whose patience came to an end, turned a fire hose full force on a band of Beatle fans who tried to storm the car park entrance of the Southern Cross Hotel. The workmen were repairing the door after the hysteria yesterday and their patience gave out when they used the fire hose to drive back defiant and drenched fans. Festival Hall, the venue for the two Beatle performances, was packed by teen- agers who frustrated efforts to hear the group with continual screaming and applause. The famous four pounded out 10 songs in half an hour, apparently oblivious of the noisy audience. The strict precautions taken by the theatre management, however, prevailed and the crowd from the first session filed out in orderly fashion to allow the second session patrons, who were in a mile-long queue, to enter the hall.SEE ALSO https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/105766395, https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/105766182.The Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 - 1995)Friday 9 August 1968 - Page 17Southern Cross Properties upSouthern Cross Properties Ltd, owner of the Southern Cross Hotel, Melbourne, again improved its position in the year to June 30 when profit rose to $334,863. Earning rate on steady ordinary capital of $4 million is up from 5.4 to 8.4 per cent. There is again no mention of a dividend. Shareholders have received nothing on their investment since the hotel company was floated in 1959. Latest result which is subject to audit, was after depreciation of $218,406 (previous year $252,945). No tax provision has been made as the company is still receiving the benefits of tax losses of past years. The lessee of the Southern Cross Hotel, Intercontinental Hotels Corporation of Australia Pty Ltd, (a Pan American Airways off shoot) paid a rent of $1,200,000 to Southern Cross Properties during the year. This compared with $1,146,345 in the previous year.
