The rate books for 1885-86 show Walmsley, a butcher, as the owner of vacant land with a 30 foot frontage to Westbourne Road and a Nett Annual Value of 5 pounds. By early 1887, Walmsley was the owner of four-room brick house 'in progress' and valued at 10 pounds. Walmsley occupied the house until at least 1895..Description:The house at 9 Westbourne Road is a single-storey, double-fronted weatherboard Victorian villa with a hipped roof clad in artificial tiles. Symmetrically composed, the central entrance door is flanked by timber-framed double-hung sash windows. A verandah with timber posts and a cast iron frieze extends across the facade. The chimney is rendered with a moulded capping. The high picket front fence is not original..Significance:The house at 9 Westbourne Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, the house represents the first phase of suburban development of the part of Kensington west of Epsom Road. Aesthetically, the house is a reasonably intact example of a Victorian timber villa which contributes to the predominantly late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape of Westbourne Road.
