General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1873)Grantee : W SydenhamBetween the construction of these houses in 1873 and 1895 Walter Sydenham was the long-standing owner. For two brief periods Joseph Ellis, the spouting manufacturer, owned 124 Capel Street. The tenants appear to be a representative group of North Melbourne residents, eg Arthur Hayes, a printer, Alfred White, a carter, William Anthony, a bootmaker. George Zeplin, a musician, who is also listed at this time as residing in his own house in William Street, West Melbourne, may have used 126 Capel St as a studio or business premises.A two-storey parapetted row house pair of stuccoed brick which has been built on the building line. An austere, bracketted cornice and a string mould are the only decoration of this symmetrically fenestrated façade.Architecturally, typically austere, early row houses of no architectural pretentions, but is an important part of a cohesive and early streetscape. Historically, like the rest of Capel Street, a representative slice of the area's skilled labourers and home-occupations residing in leased premises.
