General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1889)Grantee : B Isaacs 1872___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- George Grigg, who had this house built in 1889, was a wheelwright and coach builder whose family appears to have a long association with North Melbourne. He owned and occupied the house until after 1893 when it passed into the hands of the Australian Widow Fund, no doubt one of the many Friendly Societies operating at the time.Description- A three-storeyed, polychrome brick house with a three-level, cast-iron verandah, a hipped iron-clad roof and an iron picket fence. Minimal decoration was used.Integrity - The brickwork has been painted with the polychrome being evident only in the chimney' shaft; the verandah posts have been replaced on the upper levels as has the balustrade rail and bressumers.Streetscape - A major, corner building commencing the Courtney Street residential streetscape.Significance- Architecturally, unusual for its three-storeyed, corner form; a commanding part of the streetscape; of regional importance. Historically, associated with North Melbourne's special role in the horse and allied trades.Recommendations - Repaint in typical or original colours; restore details on verandah.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
