GRAEME BUTLER 1983, 1985 CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Late Victorian : 1885-1886Grantee : William CollisHistory- John Moxham, the carter, who lived at the time in 141 Dryburgh Street, had these two houses built for rental purposes in 1885-6. For the next ten years, the occupants included such persons as Charles Ashton, a moulder, George Ferguson, a joiner, and others of undefined occupation e.g. a Mrs. Benbow, Sarah Ann Clarke, Patrick Gorman and Robert Bodkin.Description- A two storey parapetted and stuccoed brick row house pair, with two level cast iron verandahs, iron picket fences and segment arched parapet entablature. Unusual details on the houses include the use of cast iron fence posts at the termination of masonry garden walls, the vermiculated panels beneath the cornice and the applied ornament on and around the entablature, rosettes, a garland, and a surmounting anthemion motif.Integrity- Generally typical.Streetscape- Valuable part of the Dryburgh Street north residential precinct.Architecturally, the conservative design is a well used vernacular, near original, part of a streetscape and possesses unusual details, of local importance.Historically, occupied by skilled tradesmen in areas relevant to the areas content of joiners and timber merchants, of local interest..Recommendations -Repaint in original or typical colours;use ogee gutters..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 RB 1885-86, 3287-8; RB 1895-96, 3381-2; RB 1890-91, 3453 -4; RB 1886-87, 3316-7.
