In 1888, only a two-storey building at 166 Swanston Street existed therefore both premises at 166 and 168 Swanston Street were constructed after this year (Mahlstedt Map no 8, 1888).Contributory to Swanston Street South Precinct___________________________WEBThe Bloodied Wombat's Demolished Melbournesee https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/159174168074095494/.Pubs & Pokies: A history of poker machines in Australia 2016https://timegents.com/2016/08/07/pubs-pokies/By MICK ROBERTSSURPRISINGLY, way before ‘one armed bandits’ were introduced into Australian clubs, the new invention known as poker or fruit machines first made their appearance in the bars of pubs in the 1890s.One of the earliest media references to a poker machines in pubs was in Melbourne during 1895 when Frederick Hart Pollock (pictured), of Her Majesty’s Hotel, in Swanston Street, advertised “the latest invention” for sale on Friday May 31.Pollock was selling and exhibiting one of the machines at his pub. That same year, tote machines, invented for placing bets on horse racing were also appearing in pubs and tobacco shops.By the following year the pokies had taken hold, sitting on the bars of pubs and tobacco shops across the colonies, offering cigars as prizes. They were attracting a strong interest from punters.Picture: Melbourne Sportsman October 25 1898.___________________________Graeme Butler 2024 inspectionTwo shop and residence pairs with aligned balustraded parapet:166-168 with Corinthian engaged columns and arcaded fenestration at first floor level and arched pediments over the upper level windows, with shell tympanum, under a richly detailed cornice with balustrading above. The building is of three stories, and the internal arrangements have been constructed with a view to impart comfort in every department of the establishment. The sitting rooms are sumptuously furnished, the bulk of the articles being of colonial manufacture. The bedrooms, twenty in number, are roomy and lofty and hot and cold water baths are provided. The building was erected by Mr Murdoch, from plans by Mr Conlan, architect, at a cost of nearly £5000. Mr Garton has spared no expense, the internal fitting having cost him £3000. II is intended to extend the hotel by building a large dining-room and. billiard-room in the rear, over which additional bedrooms will be erected. This will, when completed, make the hotel the most commodious in the city. Mr Garton is familiarly known in connection with Garton's Hotel, Sandridge, which he occupied for years, until the premises were destroyed by fire. His experience as a landlord is in itself a recommendation that his new premises will be worthy of the patronage of his friends and the public..1867RECEPTION OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.A meeting of the Free Banquet Committee was held last night at Garton's hotel, Swanston street; Mr. L.
