He owned and occupied it until at least 1895. From 1868, he was the surveyor for the Hotham Municipality from 1871-1890. [Victorian Municipal Directory 1880-1895]Description- A double fronted hip roofed basalt masonry house with a cast iron verandah. The iron frieze is panelled and uses the pattern patented, in Victoria, by William Hutchison in 1870. The above aspects and six panel front door typify it's early construction date. An iron picket fence on a basalt plinth is used at the front.Integrity - Roof and verandah gutters have been replaced and the colours changed.Streetscape - The termination of the Errol Street residential precinct.Significance - Architecturally, a conservatively designed, but substantially built and near original residence, constructed from a wall material used for a brief period in Melbourne's history: of high regional importance.Historically, designed, owned and built by the long-time Hotham Municipal Surveyor, Charles Hill: of regional importance.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; VMD=Victorian Municipal Directory)1. He was born at Forfar, Scotland, and arrived in the colony .by the ship .Elizabeth in the year 1852. After remaining in Melbourne for a short! period he determined to try his fortune on the gold fields, which were at that time attracting so many thousands, and according proceeded to Ballarat, taking up his quarters -on-Black Hill. While here the Eureka riots broke out, and he was an eye-witness of the historic incidents of that time. Not being very fortunate on the goldfields of Ballarat, he proceeded thence to Woodend, but meeting little better success, he abandoned the idea, and returned to Melbourne, and directed his attention to contracting, principally in connection with engineering works, carrying out successfully the construction of the Blackwood Reservoir, Melbourne to Prahran railway line, and other works of a similar nature, as well as many churches and public buildings. He subsequently became an officer of the North Melbourne Corporation, and remained in that capacity for about 25 years, only resigning some few years back, since which time he has contented himself with taking a well earned rest, and declining on several occasions to become a candidate for public life. Al together Mr. Hill has been a citizen and resident of this town for about .12 years. Ile was also an old and enthusiastic member of the Victorian Bowling Club. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, anti was largely attended by representative fellow-citizens.
