Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1910History:The house at 1 Belmont Road was built c.1910 on Lot 3 of a large 1897 subdivision which saw most of Kensington, Bayswater and Belmont Roads subdivided into suburban lots with 44 to 50 foot frontages. It was first listed in the Sands & McDougall directories in 1911, when the occupant was John H Smith, who lived there until at least 1914..Description:The house at 1 Belmont Road is a single-storey single-fronted Edwardian weatherboard cottage with a hipped corrugated galvanised steel roof with bracketed eaves. The bullnose-profile verandah has turned timber posts and a decorative carved timber frieze. The facade has a four-panel door beside a pair of timber-framed double-hung sash windows. The woven wire fence and gate appear to be early.'Significance:The house at 1 Belmont Road, Kensington, is of local aesthetic and historical interest. It is an intact representative example of the type of Edwardian cottages which were constructed in large numbers in Kensington in the early twentieth century. It contributes to the intact Belmont Road streetscape.
