GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1886)Grantee : W Sydenham 1865History- A butcher, James Cheese, owned this shop and residence from 1886, the date of its construction, until after 1895.Soon after arriving in Victoria, James Cheese set up his butcher's business in the goldfields, He moved to Hotham in 1860 and carried on his business in Curzon Street until 1878 [Victoria and its Metropolis v IIB p 687]. After farming at Blackburn for some years, he re-entered the butchering trade at this site [Victoria and its Metropolis Vol IIB p 687].Description- A two-storey hipped roof, corner shop and residence of stuccoed brick, with a timber street verandah. Bracketted eaves, a string mould and window architraves provide a classical derived ornament.Integrity - The shop fronts have been altered and the roof tiled but the verandah appears original.Streetscape - Major contributory element to the Molesworth Street precinct, being one of two large 19th Century corner shop buildings at this intersection. (Refer 18 Molesworth Street),Significance- Architecturally, a variation on the parapetted shop form, an important streetscape element, and possesses a substantial timber verandah, although other less obvious parts have been altered.Historically, firmly associated with one man, James Cheese, who was long a resident of the area: of local importance.Recommendations –Repaint in typical or original colours;restore roof material to corrugated iron or slate;restore shop fronts as desired; andrecord verandah construction for restoration data.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; V&M= Sutherland, Victoria and its Metroplis)RB 1885-86; 2559; RB 1895-6, 2522;V&M p . 687D 1884-5V&M Vol IIB, p687.___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2025__________________________________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM 1985___________________________ANCESTRY.COMSee Cheese family tree https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/person/tree/192827793/person/332515701853James Thomas Cheese was born in 1841 in Tower Hamlets, Kent, his father, Edward, was 44 and his mother, Harriet, was 33.
