General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1912History:The houses at 36-38 Kensington Road were constructed c.1912. They are first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1913, when they were occupied by John McCarthy and Ernest L Spencer respectively, both of whom remained in the houses until at least 1920..Description:The houses at 36-38 Kensington Road are a pair of semi-detached Edwardian cottages with hipped and gabled corrugated galvanised steel roofs. The houses each have verandahs with timber posts and timber fretted friezes. No. 38 retains its half-timbering to the gable end, whilst No. 36 has its original carved timber bargeboards. The side entrances are recessed. The windows to No. 36 have been replaced with steel-framed sliding windows, and the timber picket fence is recent..Significance:The houses at 36-38 Kensington Road, Kensington, are of local historical and aesthetic interest. The pair is an example of the type of small timber Edwardian cottages which were constructed in large numbers in this part of Kensington in the 1910s. The houses are contributory elements in a largely intact streetscape.
