V. : 80 pounds.Anderson & Co. are listed as the occupiers until 1880.This is the first indication of a building on this site.Earlier rate books record vacant land.1885 - Occupier:Daley & Co.Owner:Miramo & Son .…Stone store, 33' x 132'.A.A. V.: 250 pounds.No. : 307.There are numerous occupants from this date forward. Henry Berry & Co. Pty. Ltd. were one of the longer occupants, from 1915-1930. The building is then notlisted in the directories between 1940 and 1965, at which date the St. Vincent de Paul Society became the occupants.2. ARCHITECTIJRAL INFORMATION.2.1 Brief History.Apart from the date of construction, considerable researchhas not revealed any further information.2.2 Description.Single storey gable-fronted bluestone edifice of simpleexterior and narrow frontage.2.3 Construction.Coursed ashlar treatment of axed bluestone load-bearingwalls with timber floor and roof structure - corrugatediron roof. Dressed bluestone pediment to top of gable .2.4 Alterations. No major alteration is evident save for internal partitions, suspended ceilings and connection with brick addition atrear. The large window on the west side of the frontagemay have previously been a goods entrance.3.ANALYSISAlthough no historical significance has been attached to thisbuilding, it has considerable merit as one of the oldestremaining buildings in this western end of the city. The Sigmabuilding is of an earlier date, 1863-64, as is one of the "Flinders Street properties, however, the land on this blocknorth of Call ins Street was only released from public use in1864.Architecturally, although the disharmony of the front facadecaused by the non-symmetrical window treatment is visuallydisturbing, the bluestone detailing of the doors and windowsand the textured appearance of the ashlar walls contrastingwith the dressed pediment are of particular interest. The smallscale of the building adds to its interest, and no other similarexamples are known to exist in the Melbourne central area. The building is an important part of the proposed streetscapeNo. 2, and its pedestrian scale and rough textured appearancecontrast with the other buildings on the street and ensure avisual prominence.4. RECOMMENDATION.The retention of this building is essential as a representative example of the building type and style, and it should be includedon the Register of Historic Buildings.__________________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-1690https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/96041855 - part of Immigration Depot (but no buildings shown on this site).1877 - building, Anderson & Marshall.1888 - one storey building and yard to Francis St, Wine & Spirit Merchant.1905 - one storey building and yard to Francis Street, Billings & O'Hara, Wine & Spirit Merchants.__________________________________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 76763 Anderson & Marshall - Melbourne Melbourne VIC Warehouses Anderson & Marshall 1864 12 16 619 -MCC registration no 619 [Burchett Index].
