A Mrs. McDonald owned one 2 room brick shop, next to a wood and iron shop in 1874-5.5 By the early 1880s George Knight owned two brick 2-room shops on the site, indicating that they had been adapted or rebuilt as a pair. At first Knight occupied one (223) and leased the other to Jurdah Cohen, taking both by the mid 1880s 6. Alex McKinley was the. next owner, followed by a series of short term tenures, until the Boyes Brothers (of 219 Russell Street) purchased one (221), the other going to Henry Posner 7. Posner occupied both shops into the 1950s. 8 Chinese had leased 121 for a brief period in the 1890s (Chung Kee).9DescriptionA parapeted and stuccoed shop pair with sparse detailing indicating an early date. This includes scrolls either side of a central parapet block which matches other blocks at the party walls: all carrying cement orbs originally.External integrityShopfronts replaced and sheeted over, parapet detail missing, awning and signs added.StreetscapeA small part of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape, once more unified by continuous street verandahs.SignificanceAn austere and altered shop pair with little period expression to the street and probably little internal evidence of the various occupancies over the years..Notes5 Municipal rate books [RB] RBI875,1827-86 RB1882,1778-9, RB1885, 17S7-87 RB1925, 1235-68 RB1950, 864-49 RB1900,1537-810 CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS Index card 1916- (BA) BA 6584, BA 1439011 BA45602.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM_________________________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of Significance_________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-13421866 - building on site. 1874 -five- and two-room brick shop on site and a timber and iron store.
