General notes:
Grading as at 1999 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1859)The house at 29 Stawell Street, North Melbourne first appears in the 1860 rate book, described only as a house valued at £35, owned and occupied by Joseph Hamilton. The next year, it was rated more precisely as a brick house, and, by 1863, as a four-room brick house. At that time, it was still occupied by Hamilton, identified as a clerk, but a Mr Beckett was the actual owner. Hamilton remained there until 1867, when Bartholomew Beckett, surveyor, was listed both as owner and occupant. The next owner was George Naggs a furniture dealer, who lived in the house for a short time then rented it to George Goodwin, an agent. By 1873, the house had been acquired by a Mr Richards, who still owned it in the early 90s. In the intervening years it was occupied by that included George Pierce, an engineer, Andrew McRea, a carpenter, David Campbell, a labourer and various members of the Byrne family. It is a single-storey double-fronted house constructed in brick with a corrugated galvanised steel hipped roof concealed behind a brick parapet. The verandah has a cast iron frieze and stop-chamfered timber posts. The street elevation has a timber entrance door and a timber-framed double-hung sash window. It is of local historical importance, being a rare surviving example of a pre-1860 house in North Melbourne, and as such provides evidence of a particularly early and important phase of settlement in the area.
