H. HIRST, SR.One of South Melbourne's oldest identities, in Mr. Harris Hirst, passed away at a private hospital in Queen's road on Friday of last week, in his eightieth year. Mr. Hirst was the victim of a motor car accident in Mills street Sunday, June 16. when both he and Mrs. Hirst were dangerously injured. After a great fight for life. Mr. Hirst succumbed to his injuries in the presence of his family. Deceased was a resident of South Melbourne for 52 years. He leaves four children and eleven grandchildren. He took a prominent part in local affairs. The late Mr. Hirst was a man loved for his sterling qualities by every body who came in contact with him. His kindly and charming disposition made for him enduring friendships.Sincere sympathy- is extended to his wife, two sons and two daughters in the irreparable loss of a husband and father whose life has been blameless. Mrs. Hirst is still in hospital, and it is hoped that she will be completely restored to health. The remains were interred in the Kew cemetery the following day. The cortege moved from his late residence, 'Horncote,' Wright street, Middle Park at 2.30 p.m., after a service had been conducted by the Rev. W. J. Jackson of the Collins street Baptist Church, and the Rev. A. Paton Daw son of the South Melbourne Baptist Church, of which Mr. Hirst was a deacon. A further service was held at the graveside, and the solemnity of the occasion was enhanced by the impressive singing of 'Lead Kindly Light' by the Unity Male Choir of the Dorcas street Baptist Church. The wealth of flowers was a remarkable and fitting tribute to the man. The pall-bearers were: — The Mayor (Cr. P. Esmonds), Mr. G. Adamson (Pres. Middle Park Bowling Club). Mr. C. Foster (Rep. Independent Order of Rechnhites). Mr. F. Arnold (Rep. Baptist Church), and Messrs. D. J. Davidson, T. J. Scaley, J. Pakes, and K. Heywood. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Garnar (T. Reiule).
