RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:__________________________________________________DATE: 1914;ASSOCIATIONS: Michael Mulconry or Mulconroy;DESIGNER: O'Leary & Griffin?;BUILDER: O'Leary & GriffinGrading as at 1999 : E to DPeriod : Federation___________________________Derived from ALLOM LOVELL & ASSOCIATES 1999 CITY OF MELBOURNE HERITAGE REVIEW by Heather McKay 2021 (see attachment for Statement of Significance)Rate books indicate that this site was occupied by a three-room timber dwelling and a four-room timber shop from 1887 until at least 1905. During that time, both buildings were owned by Michael Mulconry, a saddler, who occupied the shop himself, and rented the small dwelling to a succession of tenants. Subsequent editions of the Sands & McDougall indicate that Mulconry's saddlery continued to operate from the shop at No.67 until the 1920s. The business was then apparently taken over by F Mulconry, probably Michael's son who established himself as a whipthong maker or a leathergoods dealer. The date of the present building has not been conclusively established. In the nineteenth century buildings, Mulconry's buildings were consistently described as being timber, while the present buildings are clearly of brick. This suggests the present buildings were erected by Mulconry after 1905. However, the Victorian-style form and detailing of the buildings they could not possibly date from later than, say, the First World War.They are a pair of double-storey Victorian-style brick shops with parapeted roofs. The shops are relatively intact at the first floor level, each having a pair of segmented arched windows with timber-framed double-hung sashes, and rendered moulded surrounds. Above these, a moulded cornice extends across the facades of both shops. The parapets are surmounted by scrolled pediments. Alterations include the replacement of ground floor shop fronts and the overpainting of the brickwork. They are of local historical and aesthetic interest, demonstrating an important phase in the ongoing commercial development of Flemington Road, a major thoroughfare towards the city. As a pair, the shops are an important element in the streetscape.___________________________MELBOURNE AND METROPOLITAN BOARD OF WORKSDetail Plan 1895shown as 65, 67 set on street but 67 has larger frontage, adjoining two shops 61, 63 as existingRecord Plan 30 1896http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/143020shows timber construction___________________________DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL1893High st61 Alexander, W., hse agt63 vacant65 Lawson, George ,67 Mulconry, Mich. saddlr69 Gilert, Mrs S confr.71 Vacant.191065 Gillooly, Mrs Anne67 Mulconry, M., sadlr
