General notes:
Period;Date: Victorian; 1883-1888History: The house was constructed in 1888. The rate book for 1883 shows N W Dickson as the owner of vacant land measuring 54 by 155 feet with an Average Annual Value of £20. The land remained undeveloped until 1888, when an eleven-room brick house, valued at £180, was listed as being owned by N W or R W Dickson. By 1900, No. 25 was occupied by the French Consulate-General, Leon De Jardin.Description: White Oaks is a large double-storey rendered brick Victorian mansion with a symmetrical front elevation dominated by two projecting gabled bays. The hipped and gabled roof is clad in slate. Unusual elements include the parapeted east elevation and the prominent chimneys which have tapered shafts and heavy, moulded caps. The front elevation incorporates window shutters and decorative elements which appear to date from later, possibly inter-War, alterations.Significance: White Oaks is of local historical and aesthetic importance. Historically, the house is one of the few remaining nineteenth century mansions in this part of South Yarra, and, as such, is representative of the major phase of development of the area in the Boom period. Aesthetically, the house is substantially intact and makes a major contribution to the streetscape.
